Pakistani Consulate in Toronto – Good example
Before I start this blog, I declare that neither I know anyone working at the Pakistani Consulate in Toronto personally nor I have been asked or paid for writing this blog or have any other positive or negative motivation or personal interests with them.
I have been living in Toronto for over 25 years. During this time, like my other fellow Pakistani Canadians I have also visited the Pakistani Consulate in Toronto, Canada, several times. And I must admit, it never failed to impress me. From the 4th/5th floor of a building at Duncan Mill Road near Leslie and 401 to near Finch and Yonge and now finally to a small plaza near Keele and Highway 7 in Vaughn, the consulate may have changed its physical locations and its premises may have gone from good to better or from bad to worse, the level of service just got better and better.
Like “Aramark” a global company that provides food, facilities, and uniform services to a variety of sectors including education, healthcare, business, and sports and whose tagline is “Our Peoples makes the difference”, I think the most outstanding quality of Toronto Consulate is the group of its million dollars’ worth of professional, courteous and smiling staff which makes each and every visit to Toronto consulate productive and pleasant. I can quote numerous examples when, during my visits, I noticed the staff going out of the way in explaining things and in trying to help people, all with a professional approach and with a smiling face.
And don’t take my feedback lightly. Being a true believer of taking and giving feedback, I observe things very closely and critically and never fail to criticize when I feel the need, but then if something is positive that also must get credit. So if I am praising the level and quality of service at the Pakistani Consulate in Toronto, I have reasons which I am going to share underneath.
Positive observations:
Planning and Organization – It appears that the team spends time periodically on considering what services do they need to offer, on planning most efficient and easier way to offer the same and on organizing both physical and human resources to deliver the same. And this planning and organizing time and effort shows in the smooth pleasant and efficient operations.
Clear guidelines – The actual work starts well before one walk into the consulate building when clear and easy to understand instructions and guidelines are provided on their website and on phone. One fully understands beforehand where the consulate is located, what their working hours are, what their contact information is, what can they expect from the consulate, what information/documents do they need to provide, how long it will take, how much will it cost and how the payment can be made. So there are no surprises which make life easier for everyone.
Easy to follow process – Instructions, guidelines, forms and procedures are simple, easy for everyone to understand not only for highly educated but also for less educated or completely uneducated people.
Free and ample parking – The current location of the consulate is in a plaza where ample parking is always available and is for free which was not the case for its earlier locations. People living in Canada can appreciate that getting to park easily and for free is a big plus when one visits any office.
Reasonable space – The premises appears to be right sized. It is neither too small nor too big and the setting is simple but professional and efficient. The decoration is also simple but elegant without being grandiose or extravagant.
Enough seating – Number of seats in the service hallway are optimal. During any of my visits to the consulate I did not see anyone standing for majority of the seats were empty, which tells that someone thought about right sizing.
Courteous staff – No matter how good or bad the place and its processes may be, if the people who deliver the services are not good, pleasant, courteous and helpful, everything is a waste. For Pakistani Consulate in Toronto, its people are the most valuable assets. My experience and observations have been all good. I always found the staff smiling, cheerful, helpful but professional. It appears they are there to help, and nothing more. And this is not a onetime experience, that’s how I always found them. A big salute to them. They make the whole experience of visiting the consulate a pleasant and memorable one.
Utilities – The place has place for prayers, children play area, clean washrooms, good lighting and is maintained at a reasonable comfortable temperature. It’s a friendly, cordial and convenient service area.
All above does not mean there is no need or room for improvement though.
Website – Though it is fully operational and serves the purpose, it would have been nicer if it was easier on eyes, responsive and better organized.
Entrance – Side entrance is used which is fine but is difficult to locate and is narrow.
Number of Service desks – At times one wishes for more service desks.
Staff Training – A small percentage of staff does not appear to be well trained, and their conduct is less professional.
However, considering the overall standard of education, level of professionalism, customer service standards and shortage of resources in our country of origin, the Pakistani Consulate in Toronto offer way more in a way better way than one would expect from our fellow Pakistanis and for that the whole team and the Consul General, specifically, deserve a big round of applause.
Thanks everyone at the consulate for doing a great job.
